St John Ambulance
Campaign message: "St John Ambulance’s vision is that no one should suffer for a lack of trained first aiders. Our volunteers help over 130,000 people each year and they are vital in supporting their local communities. We urge people to get involved and learn first aid. Don’t leave it ‘til you need it.”
Aim: To increase awareness in St John Ambulance and the flexible first aid courses they offer to communities. To recruit first aid volunteers in the regions and counties where they're most needed.
Launched: On-going
Campaign description: St John Ambulance have found that local campaigns run by their county offices are the most effective way to recruit volunteers. There are 46 St John Ambulance county offices who work with over 45,000 volunteers across the country.
St John Ambulance run local roadshows at community events, university fresher fairs and in town shopping centres. They run demonstrations throughout the day, giving people information about their first aid courses and how to become a St John Ambulance volunteer. These roadshows often generate local media coverage, as they always provide a great photo opportunity and are often linked to local radio stations. St John Ambulance also provide local media with a local case study or a local volunteer who they can speak to. The charity also run open days to invite people in to see the range of non-first aid roles they offer, such as being a youth leader.
Outside agencies involved: None
Results: A recent roadshow on a Saturday at The Grafton Shopping Centre in the centre of Cambridge resulted in enquiries from 100 local people interested in attending a first-aid course and finding out more about becoming a St John Ambulance volunteer. The local BBC radio station helped to promote the event and encouraged people to go and see their demonstration at the shopping centre.
